August is National Water Quality Month

"National Water Quality Month is dedicated to making the most of the relatively small amount of fresh water we have, because having clean water is vital to our individual health, our collective agricultural needs, and the needs of our environment."

The history of water quality month started with the Clean Water Act that was passed in 1972, in which the federal government began regulating water pollution and made it illegal to dump high amounts of toxic waste into bodies of water.

Drought Update

As extreme drought conditions persist in the west, it’s likely a water shortage will be declared along the Colorado River.

According to the July 6 update from the National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS), 17.5% of Colorado falls into the exceptional drought category, 30% is in an extreme drought, 36.4% is in a severe drought, 41.5% is in a moderate drought, and 45.5% of the state is abnormally dry.

District Manager Retires after 47 Years of Service

Patrick Fitzgerald retired at the end of May after 47 years with Platte Canyon Water & Sanitation District. Pat joined the District in 1974 as a maintenance operator and became the District Manager in 1975. During his 47 years of service, Pat had a significant impact on the changes and challenges the district has faced, especially with its expansion from 300 customers to 7,000.
