Following the tips below can prevent your lawn from getting strained during the coldest months ahead and help it reemerge healthy and lush in the springtime.

Keep Mowing – Grass continues growing until the first frost. Regular mowing keeps turf healthier. In Colorado, the ideal turf height is about 2 ½ to 3 inches.

Don’t Stop Watering – Even in fall, lawns need about ½-inch of irrigation per week. If your lawn isn’t getting at least one inch of moisture, be sure to water.

Rake Often – Fallen leaves block sunlight and trap moisture, which can smother your lawn and encourage fungi. Raking keeps your grass breathing and thriving.

Control Weeds – Fall is the best time to tackle perennial weeds like dandelions, clover, and thistle. Weed control products work best when weeds are still healthy.

Get Aerated – Soil compaction and summer heat stress can thin or brown grass. Aeration relieves compaction and allows water, air, and fertilizer to reach the roots.

Don’t Forget Fertilizer – Fertilizing in fall supplies vital nutrients to strengthen your lawn through winter and fuel lush spring growth. For best results, fertilize soon after aeration so nutrients reach deeper into the soil.
